WORKFLOW COMPARISON
Choose the workflow that helps your edit.
Ableton already has useful MIDI editing tools. CutTempo adds a focused workflow for requesting velocity and duration edits in words, reviewing them, and downloading a small .als candidate.
What you can do directly in Live
- The Velocity Editor provides selected-note randomization and velocity ramps.
- Groove Pool can alter timing and velocity, including random timing variation.
- Span in Live 12 Standard and Suite provides articulation and note-length variation.
- Velocity Shaper in Live 12 Standard and Suite shapes velocities with an envelope.
Span and Velocity Shaper are not included in Live 12 Intro. Velocity Shaper is a bundled Max for Live MIDI Tool included with Standard and Suite. Editing or building custom Max for Live tools, or using third-party Max for Live MIDI Tools, requires Suite or Standard with the Max for Live add-on.
See Ableton’s edition table and MIDI Tools manual. The MIDI editor guide and Groove Pool guide explain the native velocity and timing controls.
When a small .als review may help
Consider CutTempo when you want to describe a dynamics or articulation goal in words and inspect note changes before keeping them. You confirm a clip-local range, review velocity and duration, restore unwanted edits, and download a candidate. Pitches and note starts stay fixed.
Preparing a small set and returning to Live adds steps. CutTempo is useful only if this review saves you enough editing effort. For a quick adjustment, immediate instrument playback, a large project or timing edits, Live’s native tools may be the better fit.
CutTempo currently accepts .als files up to 300 KB and 256 MIDI notes, with at most one MIDI clip per track. Its sine preview does not render the set’s instruments, and the full Ableton round trip remains pending verification. Read the supported-file and host-verification guide.
Try a specific request
A velocity request or a note-length request opens the workspace with a suggested instruction when there is no existing draft. Existing drafts stay intact. It does not upload a file or submit a generation automatically. Both fields remain eligible for an edit, so inspect both in the review.
- Start a velocity request · Read the dynamics guide
- Start a note-length request · Read the articulation guide
