MIDI EDITING GUIDE
Adjust MIDI velocity without moving notes.
If the rhythm already works, refine the dynamics. CutTempo can propose velocity and note-length edits in a small Ableton .als file while keeping pitches and note starts fixed.
Start with the dynamics you want
Velocity tells a MIDI instrument how strongly a note is played. Lowering a sharp accent or varying repeated notes may help a part feel less rigid. The audible result depends on how your instrument responds to velocity.
For a velocity-focused request, try: “Soften the loudest piano notes and add subtle velocity variation. Leave note lengths unchanged.”
This instruction expresses your intent. The edit system allows both velocity and duration changes, so check both fields in the review before keeping a candidate.
Review the change in four steps
- Prepare a supported small .als file. Selecting it uploads it for inspection; read the file limits and preparation guide first.
- Confirm the tracks and a beat range within each selected clip.
- Describe your dynamics, generate a candidate, and compare velocity and duration.
- Restore unwanted edits, download the candidate, and check it in Ableton Live.
Each velocity must stay within 1–127 and no more than 24 units above or below its source value. CutTempo does not move note starts or add timing humanization.
Start a velocity requestYou can also do this inside Live
Ableton’s Velocity Editor supports selected-note randomization and velocity ramps. If that meets your goal, you can work directly in Live and hear the changes through your instrument. See Ableton’s official MIDI editing guide and our comparison with native tools.
What the preview proves
CutTempo’s A/B preview uses simple sine voices and an assumed tempo. It helps you inspect symbolic changes; it does not play your Live instruments. Ableton opening, instrument playback, continued editing, saving and reopening are still pending host verification. A download or a successful reparse does not establish those results.
View the downloadable symbolic example or read the upload, account and preview FAQ before using your own material.
